The 1st AGM of the Belfast Linux Users Group was held in the main Lecture
Theatre, Queens University Belfast on 30th November 2000.
- The meeting started at 19.20. Sixteen members were present.
Apologies were received from Andrew Wilson, who is on a Mickey Mouse
assignment in the US.
- Commercial Backing
What should BLUG do about Cash Flow? Should we accept Sponsorship? If so
how can we recognise this support.
The consensus was that we should try and get some money in the bank. This
can be used for running costs, in order to promote the use of Linux to a
greater extent in the community.
Supporters should be named on the website, with a description of how they
have actually supported us. It was decided to list all our benefactors on
a separate section of the site.
Brian Galbraith asked if there would be an interest from the members in
BLUG accessories, eg. polo shirts and T-shirts. There was sufficient
interest shown, so enquiries will be made.
Martin Pauley clarified the situation with Blackstar. Blackstar is a
beneveolent sponsor, with no plans for Total-BLUG Domination. This was
accepted by all present. He also offered to investigate the possibility
of obtaining charitable status, in an attempt to seek some community and
possibly Lottery funding.
Committee Election Procedure
- The committee were introduced.
- No nominations for the Liaisons Post have yet been made public.
- The Meetings post is still pending approval.
What is the BLUG role?
Generally approved. Future elections will have strict time limits
The Web site
A unanimous vote decided that we should be promoting the use of Linux to
the community in general, particularly in business and schools. We
discussed how to get in to the community. Brian Galbraith has been tasked
to approach PC World to offer our
services in the promotion of Linux.
This would involve setting up a demonstration and manning the stand. PC
World was chosen because they have a large number of customers visiting,
which would give us maximum exposure.
- Should we try for our own mini-distribution?
There is a need for content on the web site. Paddy is to produce a
"standard form" to make submissions easier. Danny will be chasing people
- We need links to distributions
- Separate page for Sponsors
- Reviews of Distributions
- Paddy to check with MRK re Linux Format articles
The first member to contribute an article to the site which is /.'d
will recieve a free BLUG T-shirt. (Oh My God!!! -dw)
The belfastlinux.cx site is operational again, however belfastlinux.org
is available. Andy Whalley to chase that one. Contact e-mail address to
be [email protected]
- Meetings are to continue at the present frequency
- The Geosciences building will still be available

The constitution is to be ammended to specify strict time scales for
nominations and elections.
Sound like a really "wierd" lot. We shall be combining meetings when
- 18 so far... any more takers contact Danny.
We were asked what our stance was on other Open Source operating systems.
The response was: Linux is a common link, others are welcome.
At 21.30 the meeting was called to a close, and we all went to the bar.
